Gimenez: New construction projects to transform Downtown Miami

WATSON ISLAND, Fla. (WSVN) -- With several multimillion-dollar projects set to break ground in Downtown Miami, city officials said the area is on the verge of a major transformation.
With dozens of new buildings already finished and cranes in place for more construction, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said downtown is being re-shaped. "There are multi-billion-dollar projects that are coming that will create our version of Grand Central Station," he said.
Top real estate executives said there are a few major projects in development. Among them is the Brickell City Center. "It is a truly transformational project that will bring a total change in what parts of downtown will look like and more importantly, how they're going to operate," said Gimenez.
Another project currently in the works is the Miami World Center, a more than 25-acre, 12-million-square-foot commercial, residential and entertainment project. "It's ready to have the largest hotel that's built in the state and some interesting and creative uses between the mix of retail and residential," said Gimenez.
Plans are already underway for a 1,000-foot Skyrise Tower at Bayfront Park. "The skyline of the city in five years will be much different than the skyline of the city today," said Gimenez.
A new vision for Flagler Street, Flagler Streetscape, aims to create a more a pedestrian-friendly area.
In addition, Island Gardens, a $640 million project set to include a massive marina, a couple of hotels and high-end retail stores is scheduled to get off the ground on Watson Island this summer.
"Things aren't just happening downtown, but there are great things happening on Miami Beach and other parts of Miami-Dade County," said Gimenez, "so we're very hot in real estate commodity, Miami-Dade is, and we're getting hotter."
Work on the Island Gardens Project is required to begin by June 2.
