South Beach is Miami-Dade’s most recognized neighborhood, and it’s celebrating its Art Deco glory during Art Deco Weekend, from Friday through Sunday. See a different side of South Florida and slip on your country boots and watch teams of DJs from the KISS Country FM station compete in a free chili cook-off event at Midtown Miami on Friday.
The English lit fanatics can see free Shakespeare in the Park in Miami on Friday. Or perhaps head to Wynwood for an art/music/architecture mash-up fundraiser for the newly-formed PAXy organization Saturday at the Lightbox at Goldman Warehouse. As always, the third Friday night of the month is free at the Miami Children’s Museum, every Friday night is free at Wolfsonian Museum and the Bird Road Art Walk is Saturday.
Celebrating the grandeur of SoBe at Art Deco Weekend
The pioneers at the Miami Design Preservation League on Miami Beach fought hard to save and renovate the many Art Deco-era hotels and buildings that give the area its uniqueness, and that’s what Art Deco Weekend is celebrated every January. Between Friday and Sunday the event will feature free screenings of films like “Miami Vice” and “The Bird Cage” that show SoBe in all its glory. Also, Art Deco-era cars will be on display, there will be vintage clothing for sale, a swing dance party and performances by Alan Harris and the Deco All-Stars and The Decotones. Hours are Friday noon to 11 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Y’all head to Midtown for a country chili cook-off
Kick off your Friday night with some hot competition at Midtown Miami when two teams of DJs from KISS Country FM square off to see who’s got the best chili recipe during theDJ Chili Showdown and Cornbread Recipe contest from 6-8 p.m. No, they won’t be baking cornbread; that’s where you come in. Those attending are encouraged to enter their cornbread recipes in a contest for a chance to win tickets to the big annual Chili Cook-off in Hollywood next weekend as well $200.
Shakespeare’s classic The Tempest showcased in the Grove
Just about any classic by playwright William Shakespeare is filled with intrigue, plot twists and forbidden love but in The Tempest Bill mixes in a bit of magic. The story goes like this…the Duke of Milan, Prospero, and his daughter Miranda, are cast out of the town by his evil brother Antonio. Well, the Duke won’t have that and resorts to sorcery in his revenge plot against his sibling. The performances are Friday through Sunday night at 8 p.m. on an outdoor stage set up at Shell Lumber at 27th Avenue and Southwest 27th Street.
PAXy art/music/architecture mash-up Saturday in Wynwood
The indie-vibe, live music and arts venue PAX (Performing Arts Exchange) may be gone from the scene and, yes, those late-night funk jams from Miami’s own Suenalo are greatly missed. However, the name has resurfaced as PAXy, a cultural events organization whose first fundraiser is Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Lightbox at Goldman Warehouse. Works by local artists, including Bhakti Baxter, Antonia Wright and Gustavo Matamoros, will be on display along with an architectural installation by four local architects. Performing that night are Deaf Poets and DJs Alex Alejandro and SirChampa. There’s a $10 suggested donation, which goes toward PAXy matching its grant from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.
Celebrate those lovely pink feathers at Flamingo Fest
What better place to celebrate our most famous Florida bird, the flamingo, than at Flamingo Gardens in Davie during the Flamingo Fest Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The celebration will include flamingo fashions, a plastic flamingo contest called Fabulous Flamingos, flamingo-themed art in the show A Flamboyance of Flamingo and musical performances by tribute acts the Blues Brothers Soul Band and Almost Manilow. There are discount coupons available so adults pay only $13.50 and kids 3-11 pay $7.50.
