Broward's flood maps take effect August 18

Map: Broward County new flood zones

Beginning Monday, thousands of Broward County homeowners won't have to carry flood insurance anymore. That's when new flood zone maps take effect
Some 60 percent of land parcels that lay in flood zones were dropped in the latest maps. Most are west of the Florida Turnpike in newer communities that had drainage improvements and higher elevations, including virtually all of Pembroke Pines, Miramar and large sections of Weston.
However, about 31,000 Broward properties were found to be more vulnerable to flooding than previously thought, meaning they'll need flood insurance if they have federally regulated or insured mortgages. About 25 percent of the parcels in the county remain in a flood zone.
